The Art of Self-Defence

Knowing you have the physical and mental capacity to take care of yourself is one thing. However, for many, the physical protection aspect involves just being somewhat agile, fit and healthy. Are these characteristics enough to protect yourself from hostile situations or threatening individuals?

For many people, they just need to have some form of reassurance that they can adequately protect themselves and others around them. This is where self-defence training comes into play.

Many people assume self-defence classes as being a space to practice martial arts such as kickboxing, judo, taekwondo or jiu-jitsu. However, a self-defence course comes in many forms, and they can usually be tailored to accommodate specific needs, age groups or ability levels.

Why Might you Need Self-Defence Training?

There are several reasons why someone might consider taking self-defence classes, but it starts with the fundamental task of determining what that person might want to achieve with such a class.

  • Do you want to use these classes to improve your situational awareness of potential threats?
  • Are you looking for a women’s self-defence class?
  • Do you need one-to-one training?
  • Are you a Close Protection Operative, or a current (and former) serving law enforcement or military operative who requires a bespoke course?
  • Do you need specific self-defence weapons training?
  • Are you considering a Gap year, or travelling abroad to a dangerous or hostile environment, and want reassurance that you can protect yourself?

These are some of the many questions that are asked regarding self-defence training. Here at ATR, we specialise in Close Quarter Protection (CQP) within our bespoke self-defence classes. This involves teaching you beyond the standard physical protection techniques, and involves using your state of mind, posture and creating that space to improve your personal safety.

Why else might someone want to take a private self-defence class, taught by former military, law enforcement and UKSF operatives?

Benefits of Self Defence Classes

  • Improve awareness

CQP self-defence sessions can help delegates refine their situation awareness. Essentially, they can become more aware of themselves, their surroundings and be able to identify potential threats. Self-defence training, traditionally speaking, involves preparing delegates for any threatening situations that can arise by maximising your personal security, safety and awareness.

  • Boost confidence

Whether a child, teenager or adult, self-defence training courses can be vital for building and improving self-confidence. The skill levels that delegates progress through, get harder as they get further through the course. But as they progress, they can gain confidence in their abilities and how they approach challenges.

  • Help physical and mental health

Regular Close Quarter Protection training sessions are excellent ways to get exercise, and as previously mentioned, they can be more physically demanding as delegates progress through the courses. This constant commitment can lead to improved physical fitness levels, and by extension, mental health for participants. Particularly if a delegate has been the victim of a crime, a self-defence class can be a fundamental part of the healing process.

  • Teach you how to protect others, as well as yourself

While effective self-defence groups teach delegates how to defend themselves from attackers, they teach essential skills (and where and when to use them) to protect other people when needed. You may be learning how to defend yourself using your own body as the weapon, meaning you can respond effectively and quickly to aggressive or dangerous situations, maximising your safety as well as the safety of others.

  • Be a good social skill-booster

Many of the fundamental principles of self-defence sessions focus on self-respect. Many classes teach respect and responsibility for each other as well as yourself. If you don’t respect yourself how can you do the same for others? Many self-defence courses rely on training with partners, so there does need to be that mutual trust between each other. The more you do this, the better impact it will have on your life as a whole, and your social and life skills.
