Creating Better Futures is a charity committed to helping vulnerable children and orphans in Zimbabwe go to school, supporting them with projects focused on sanitation, nutrition and more. The charity is passionate about helping children achieve their full potential in the face of their adversities, and how education is a vital part of breaking the cycle of poverty and helping children to create opportunities for themselves.

Advanced Tactical Resources are firm supporters of the Creating Better Futures cause, and a percentage of the takings received from these two courses will be donated to the charity.

Situational Awareness Training for Women and Children

As a company, we are dedicated to helping women and children feel safer, protected and adopt a military-esque mindset of situational awareness that could help them avoid danger. Our situational awareness courses are designed to help each individual mentally and physically prepare for developing risks and threats in their immediate environment, with the help of scenario-based training exercises.

If you are unaware of your surroundings, you present yourself as a target without even realising it. Even in environments that are familiar to you, this is not a justifiable reason to lower your guard, as poor personal security or situation awareness can present opportunities for attacks or assaults. Unfortunately, these incidents are far too commonplace for women and children, hence why we offer comprehensive, structured, bespoke situational awareness and decision-making training.

Why are We Offering Women’s Situational Awareness Training?

The past year has seen several notable cases of stalking, threatening behaviour and violence against women. In many cases, the pandemic has worsened these incidents as national lockdowns have made it easier for stalkers to target victims at home, particularly when COVID-19 restrictions were at their most stringent.

Currently, cases point to an increasing number of stalking incidents, with very little in the way of respite for women. More than 80,000 stalking cases were recorded by police forces last year. Reports suggest that the police are struggling to keep up with the growing amounts of cases; arrests of stalking offenders grew at half the rate that incidents increased between 2019 and 2020. One notable recent case involved a woman who had been stalked, verbally threatened and harassed for six years, and still, no charge has been issued. That said, the police stipulate that protecting women is a priority.

According to the stalking advocacy charity Paladin, a spokesperson said that one in two stalkers carry out their threats.

The increase of stalking cases, coupled with the widely-reported Sarah Everard case, has led to an overwhelming number of women feeling vulnerable and unsupported by the police. There is also a growing distrust in the police force, considering an officer admitted to committing the horrific offences on Sarah Everard. The case drew massive attention to prevalent issues of women’s safety. Large numbers of women feel vulnerable, unsafe and at risk, even in their own homes.

It’s essential to recognise the bravery and conviction it takes to come forward to the authorities with stories. Still, Advanced Tactical Resources want to ensure that women and children stay aware and in control during everyday situations, as that is where they need to feel the safest.

We have recently conducted some free webinars discussing situational awareness techniques and strategies on avoiding unnecessary risks and the emergency actions you could take to create space between yourself and your assailant. We had recently received the below testimonial from an attendee:

“I lead nordic walking groups of women in the Berkshire countryside, and I organised for ATR to run an online event highlighting how to keep ourselves safe whilst out walking either in groups or on our own. [They] are so knowledgeable about their profession/subject and how they articulate their knowledge is easy to understand, remember and feel that if it were needed to put it into action, one would feel confident doing so.”

This person felt that their awareness of “how to read and interpret everyday situations” is “vital to keeping safe.”

Why Situational Awareness Training Can Save Lives

This is not explicitly a type of self-defence training or close protection training - which, coincidentally, we do offer - but rather learning the meaning of situational awareness. Our training courses are bespoke to each person, and our accredited, professional trainers can adjust and structure the material so you feel safe in everyday situations and - through scenario-based exercises - simulate potentially hostile situations too.

All courses have the same aim: to keep women and children safe. We accomplish this by training you to become self-aware, mindful of your surroundings, avoidance and anticipating warning signals in your immediate environment. We want to equip you with the physical and mental preparedness and mindset to quickly and efficiently avoid conflict, create space and protect yourself.

By learning how to develop, improve and practice situational awareness in everyday situations, you’ll leave the course with the following skills:

  • How to be self-aware
  • How to avoid complacency
  • How to avoid ignoring dangers, risks or threat indicators
  • How to make intelligent decisions
  • How to spot trends and potential dangers
  • Knowing situational awareness is a mindset

The simple three-stage process can be summarised as follows:

  1. Evaluate the situation
  2. Spot the hazards or warning signs
  3. Think quickly of how it can be avoided and handled

Of course, it’s difficult to emphasise the effectiveness of situational awareness training without attending the classes, which you can find by clicking our course page.

Upcoming Training Course Dates

If you cannot make any of the courses mentioned above, don’t fret because more dates will be added in due course. This prevalent issue of women and child safety is not going away; Advanced Tactical Resources will continue to dedicate time and resources to training women and children to feel safer and less at risk.
